I grew up in the 50′s in a middle-class suburb of Chicago where all the houses and people looked the same. My mother stayed home to raise her four children. Cleo journeyed alone at the age of 29 to spend four years in Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. She had been commissioned at that time, through the University of Washington-Seattle, to study the educational system of the various South American republics and the educational conditions for women in Latin America. Her interest and concern for the situation of women in Latin American and her goal of bringing new ideas into the school systems in Chile, speaks of the dreams, she held for women, not just in America, but all over the world.

Is my grandmother leading me? Is she asking me to join her on the quest into the future? Just as she examined the world and wanted to see its new possibilities, I too, am urged to live as big as the story I found in her.

I don’t need to go anywhere to find that adventurous spirit. The magic wand of the fairy godmother is within me. I find it where I am and with the ideas that speak to me. My grandmother’s life will guide me to a place I have never seen before. What opportunities lay ahead for me is in the unknown. What I claim in certainty is the personal power that my grandmother left for me as my journey unfolds!

A Reason Why the Father Daughter Relationship Is Important – Role Playing

Those forming and impressionable years are vital and dads have to get it right in how we raise and love our little girls. There are no manuals, but you will find plenty of how to books.

Dinner time is an important time in the home. Everyone has the opportunity to talk about their day and express how or what they feel. Time at the table is a time of learning for children; they learn how to be sociable and often times our daughters will compete for dad’s attention if they see another sibling getting more than a fair share. When our daughters ask a question and they look to daddy to ask “daddy isn’t that right?”if she’s wrong, tell her in a way that doesn’t hurt her feelings.

Remember, she’s impressionable. You can yet give her the correction, but let her know she’s a very smart girl for asking a great question. When she seeks your approval, give it to her; let her know she is special. If you have two or more daughters, do triple in reassuring them, they are precious (Because they are). When our daughters role play, they are imitating an experience, something they learned from home or day care. In letting them role play, you can gently guide her and correct those things that need your attention.

Hearing Aids and Modern Family Football Matters

My dad worked in construction for more than 20 years. He’s a wizard with home fix-it projects but also hard of hearing; he said it was from all the power tools around the job site. It used to drive me crazy because unless I was within 6 feet of him, I’d always have to repeat what I said. Dad blamed power saws for being practically deaf in one ear, whether it was the power tool or rock concerts, his life changed dramatically last year when he finally gave in to our advice and got a hearing aid from a local doctor. The man can hear a chuckle from two rooms away and has experienced genuine improvement in his quality of life.

Humans have been using hearing aids long before we were using electricity, in fact some of the first hearing devices date back to the Middle Ages. These amounted to what was basically a megaphone the user would hold up to their ears to catch additional sound waves. Less than fashionable, but acoustic hearing aids were used widely until the early 19th century. As the miniaturization of our industrial technology continued, the hearing-aid industry saw the introduction of carbon-filled microphones which allowed the user to pick up more range and sound frequency. The carbon produced a scratchy sound amplification effect, and was phased out after the implementation of the vacuum tube to hearing aid devices in 1921.

The transistor hearing aid gained popularity during the 1950′s and 1960′s, these two-piece systems would be called the first “streamline” hearing aid design. Flash ahead to modern-day 21st Century, there’s more advanced technology in vending machines than the most sophisticated transistor hearing aid of the 1960′s (right around the time my father first started using power tools coincidently).

How Does My Wrist Work?

Your wrist is defined as the composite of bones, joints, and other parts that form the part of the extremities that connect your forearm to your hands. Your wrists are part of your everyday life and are almost always part of any action you take every day. These bones and ligaments work together to allow a person to do activities such as marginal movements. These eight bones which make-up the wrist include: scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitates, and hamate. On the other hand, the ligaments which make-up the wrist include: volar radiocarpal ligament, dorsal radiocarpal ligament, ulnar collateral ligament, and radial collateral ligament.

There are a total of five different movements your wrist can do and these movements correspond with the bones, muscles, ligaments, and arteries present in your wrist. The following movements are as follows:

Extension

This refers to the wrist joint movement of extending and straightening the joints in the wrist in order to increase the angle between the two bones of the extremities. When extending your wrist, the muscles that are responsible for these are your extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis and extensor carpi ulnaris.

Flexion

This refers to the process of bending the wrist joint to decrease the angle between the two bones of the extremities. When doing this, just like when you clench your hand and turn it into a fist, you use flexor carpi radialis and flexar carpi ulnaris muscles.

Ulnar Deviation

This movement refers to the process of moving your wrist closer to the midline of your body. This movement uses the muscles, flexor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi ulnaris that acts together in order for it to work.

Radial Deviation

This movement, on the other hand, is the process in which the wrist is turned away from the midline of the body. This uses the muscles, lexor carpi radialis and extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis acting together in order to work.

With the correct positioning and utmost care while moving the wrists, you can avoid wrist injuries that may affect ligaments, muscles, and bones, that make-up this important body part.

Genius of Place – The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted

The gift of artistic vision on the large stage of life is rare. When witnessed it is so overwhelming few can appreciate its impact for years to come.

Such was the man, Frederick Law Olmstead, the founder of landscape architecture in the United States, designer of Central Park and many other significant parks, communities and schools.

By today’s educational and academic standards, Olmsted was a “self made man” with little formal education. Raised on a farm and barely supervised by various schoolmasters, Olmsted was free to roam about the grounds and explore his grandmother’s book collection. At the age of nine, Olmsted supplemented his erratic education with consuming such works as The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith and Laurence Sterne’s Sentiment Journey Through France and Italy.

His curiosity for life contributed to his love of nature and adventure. His quest to learn about the world and yearn to travel also presented him with challenges no one could have prevented him from exploring. Olmsted was a determined person whose kept his own counsel.

As often the case with exceptional talent, determination and vision can override more socially acceptable characteristics. Fortunately, for us all, Olmsted’s skills and talents had shown through any personality defects that could have dismantled his successes.

Remarkably, New York’s Central Park was Olmsted’s first architectural landscape project. His official position for the task was as a superintendent to oversee the labor in dismantling the previous scattering of gardens throughout the city.

The park project came at a time when cities were expanding quickly and an interest in the country of creating communities that are more hospitable was on the rise. The population of Manhattan more than doubled from the 1840′s to 1860′s from three hundred thousand to almost eight hundred thousand. The demand for some open space and tranquil grounds was heightened as more people moved to the city.

The cry for open space in the nineteenth century was heard across the country. James Gordon Bennett in the New York Herald compared a park to a pair of lungs when he wrote, “There are no lungs on the island. It is made up entirely of veins and arteries.”

The dismantling and clearing of the previous 17 separate park locations was not without controversy and heartache for many. Local businesses and unwelcome manufacturing plants such as bone-boiling plants that processed animal carcasses to create glue to match manufacturers inhabited most of the 700 acres of land. There were impoverished immigrants crowded into one-room cabins. Some had formed communities called Dutch Hill and Dublin Corners.

All had to go. It was accomplished by eminent domain, the first time in U.S. history that this principle had been used to create a large park. They city earmarked money to pay off the occupant’s.

Although Olmstead was the park’s superintendent, he had no official role at the time as a designer. Andrew Jackson Downing with his partner, Calvert Vaux, was the original force behind the park. Downing and Vaux were to submit a design for the park.

In 1852, Downing died in a riverboat accident and Vaux asked Olmsted to take his place. In 1858, they entered the competition to design the park with an entry they termed Greensward, which was chosen as the park’s design. Vaux and Olmsted continued to partner on many projects off and on through the years.

Vaux was an architect, a skill that was a perfect complement to Olmsted’s more aesthetic eye.

In the succeeding chapters, Martin’s attention to detail is breathtaking. He describes Olmsted’s vision and plans with great clarity and his eye for balance. Martin’s skill is exceptional as he describes Olmsted’s design with a footpath here, a Willow tree there and mound rising to soften the landscape over there.

Martin takes the reader through the painstaking political process that almost capsized the entire project as Olmsted and Vaux envisioned and was eventually approved. The reader joins with Olmsted’s life of travels, missions and projects world wide and throughout the United States. Olmsted put his mark on many U.S. landmark’s both public and private, including Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY, Stanford University in California and Niagara Falls State Reserve. The entire list is profound.

The biography is a comprehensive journal of Frederick Law Olmsted’s life written with great precision and exhaustive historical specifications. However, these elements do not get in the way of a well-told tale. Indeed, Martin’s respect for history only enrich the experience of reading a biography that goes beyond the narrow life of one individual to encompass a century of lifestyle, politics and personal relationships.

Coin Book Reviews – A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars By Q David Powers

The 2nd edition of “A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, A complete History and Price Guide” was released in paperback form on March 31, 2005.

The first chapter discussed the appeal and challenges of collecting Morgan Dollars and a few tidbits about the history of the Morgan Dollar. While only 5 and 1/2 pages long, the first chapter is filled with interesting facts. As you enter chapter two, the book goes back a ways and discussed the history of dollar coins in general going back to the Spanish Milled Dollars, then the Mint Act of 1792 and how US coinage began. There are several paragraphs discussing the early dollar coins, there popularity, or lack thereof, and how the dollar was eliminated and replaced with the Trade Dollar.

The book does a very decent job of describing the events that were happening during this time period such as the troubling times for silver companies and the political involvement to help them out that eventually led to the Morgan Dollar. Chapters 3 and 4 are packed with excellent information on the design process for the Morgan Dollar and them the minting process. For a new collector, this is very good information.

Chapter 5 discusses the five, yes five different mints that produced Morgan Dollars, although the Denver mint only produced Morgan Dollars for one year, the year 1921. Chapter five also gives a little bit of history about each of the mints.

Chapter 6 discusses the various hoards of silver dollars discovered long after the demise of the dollar. Some once thought scare dates were now plentiful as the US Treasury began releasing and selling Silver Dollars held in vaults for years.

Chapter 7 delves into the variety of ways you can collect Morgan Dollars. If you are at all familiar with Morgan Dollars, then you know that there is a multitude of ways to collect this coveted coin. Chapter 7 will give you many ideas to help you narrow down the way you may want to collect this series

Chapter 8 discusses grading and the ANA grading scale. If you are familiar with the scales, then there is not much new here. Also, this is also where I think the book could stand some improvement. There are pictures providing examples for each grade, but like most, if not all books about grading, there are only descriptions for MS60 and above. I would have liked to see large pictures for each MS grade. This would give collectors a clear indication of the impact of bag marks in regards to grading.

Chapter 9 discusses the many varieties within the Morgan series while Chapter 10 is where the real meat of the book is. Chapter 10 contains a page for each and every year and mint of the entire Morgan Dollar series. Each page contains information on keys to collecting, circulation strikes, prooflike coins, price guide, availability guide, mintage and distribution and varieties. Each page is jam-packed with information very specific to each date and mint. In addition, there is a summary for each year that discussed things going on at the time and other general information about Morgan Dollars for that year. This type of information no doubt took years to gather and is invaluable to the serious Morgan Dollar collector.

Chapter 10 is buy far the longest and provides incredible detail for each and every year and mint of the Morgan series. There is one page for each date/mint that provides information such as optimal collecting grade, PCGS population (although outdated as more coins become certified), estimated field population, total mintages, varieties, etc. In addition, there is a page for each year that discusses collecting and how life was during that particular year. In all, chapter 10 is for the series Morgan Dollar collector.

In summary, if you are a series Morgan Dollar collector, or just a beginner, this is a must have book. The information provided in this book is incredible and provides the collector with incredible information into collecting one of the most popular coins collected today.

This book gets 4 1/2 stars.

If this book had blown up pictures of Mint State type coins, it would have rated a 5. Since the Morgan Dollar is most desired in Mint State, it puzzles me as to why graded pictures are not provided.
